Stand up for immigrant students' rights in Fort Worth, Texas

Stand up for immigrant students' rights in Fort Worth, Texas
The Issue
Teaching in Fort Worth ISD has given me the opportunity to work with a diverse group of students, many of whom are Emergent Bilingual (EB) students. Over the years, I have witnessed these students' relentless determination to excel despite the challenges they face as immigrants. These young learners deserve the same educational opportunities and rights as any other student in Texas. Unfortunately, their fight for a quality education is often marred by unnecessary legal and systemic hurdles.
Texas is home to a significant population of immigrant families, and it is crucial to ensure that their children receive an equitable education. These students bring richness to our classrooms, and their unique experiences contribute to a more vibrant and inclusive learning environment. Yet, they are frequently met with barriers that hinder their academic progress, such as insufficient language support, limited access to college preparatory courses, and a lack of representation in gifted and talented programs.
We need to address these disparities by implementing statewide policies that prioritize the needs of immigrant students. This includes increasing funding for English language programs, providing training for teachers to address the specific needs of EB students, and enforcing policies that advocate for their inclusion in all aspects of the educational system.
Moreover, it is imperative to hold educational institutions accountable, ensuring they abide by federal and state laws that protect the rights of immigrant students. The Supreme Court case Plyler v. Doe guarantees that all children, regardless of immigration status, have the right to free public education. We must stand together to uphold this decision and advocate for continued support and resources for our immigrant students.
Fort Worth ISD was recently taken over by TEA and has a new Superintendent and Board of Managers. Recently, they announced plans to close the INA Campus (International Newcomer Academy) and end our Language Center classes on our traditional campuses. When immigrant students come to our district, they're in culture shock, confused and overwhelmed. Our INA campus and Language Center classes provide these students the opportunity to acclimate to their new school and country in a safe and comfortable environment while they learn English and social and behavioral norms.
By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for immigrant students in Fort Worth ISD and setting a precedent for all Texas school districts. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and ensure that they receive the quality education they deserve. Let's work towards creating a more inclusive educational system that embraces and supports all learners, regardless of their background. Sign the petition to make a change for the betterment of our community and the future of these students.
