The Issue
I have recently been met with the heartbreaking news that the Vice President of Academic Affairs has proposed shutting down the Religious Studies major at Bethany College. This isn’t just another program—it’s part of what Bethany is. From the very beginning, when Alexander Campbell founded the college, the study of religion, ethics, and big questions about life was meant to be at the center of the student experience. That hasn’t changed; and it shouldn’t. Religious Studies has shaped generations of students in ways that go far beyond a major. Its impact shows up in Bethany’s traditions, in the way students learn to think critically and engage with different perspectives, and in the careers alumni go on to pursue: law, education, public service, ministry, and more. These classes aren’t “small”, they’re personal. They’re where real conversations happen, where students are known, challenged, and mentored. Reducing this department to enrollment numbers completely misses its value. It reaches students across campus through general education and electives, and it provides something that larger, high-enrollment programs simply can’t replicate. Getting rid of Religious Studies won’t just cut a major, but take away a core part of Bethany’s identity. We are calling on current students, alumni, faculty, and community members: speak out, sign this petition, and help stop this proposal. Bethany deserves to hold onto what makes it meaningful.
