“Stand Together for Local Legal Support: Preserve Peel’s Independence"
The issue
We, the undersigned, are residents and supporters of the Peel region, and we strongly oppose the proposal of a merger of Peel Community Legal Services with an organisation in the metropolitan area or the removal of management to an authority outside of our local community.
Reasons for Our Objection:
1. Local Expertise and Understanding: Peel Community Legal Services is uniquely equipped to address the specific needs of our community. Its staff possess invaluable local knowledge and have built strong relationships and trust with residents, enabling them to respond quickly and effectively to local issues.
2. Support for Vulnerable Populations: The service primarily assists women and individuals who are vulnerable due to family violence or financial disadvantage, who cannot afford private legal representation. Its continued independence is crucial for providing accessible legal assistance to those who need it most.
3. Collaboration with Local Organisations: By working closely with community service organisations across the region, Peel Community Legal Services has established strong partnerships that enhance service delivery and outcomes for clients. A merger would jeopardise these connections.
4. Prevention of Homelessness: Peel Community Legal Services plays a vital role in advising and supporting tenants facing eviction. In the current housing crisis, this support is essential to prevent homelessness, especially for at-risk families and women.
We urge decision-makers to preserve the independence of Peel Community Legal Services and maintain its critical role in our community.
We call upon our local MLAs, the Attorney General and the Premier to advocate on behalf of Peel Community Legal Services and reject the merger proposal.
By signing this petition, we affirm our support for keeping Peel Community Legal Services independent and locally focused.
