Quezon Province is facing alarming rates of deforestation and illegal activities, leading to severe environmental and socio-economic consequences. The loss of forest cover threatens the province’s biodiversity, soil stability, and climate balance, endangering both wildlife and human communities.

 

One of the most concerning cases is in Sariaya, Quezon, particularly in the Riverside area, where a significant portion of the forest has been cleared. Local residents suspect illegal mining operations are taking place under the guise of personal interests, worsening deforestation and disrupting the natural ecosystem. These activities not only destroy forested lands but also pollute nearby rivers, deplete soil nutrients, and displace local wildlife.

 

Similarly, Pagbilao is under threat due to illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and weak enforcement of environmental laws. Large-scale deforestation in the area contributes to the destruction of watersheds, loss of endemic species, and increased carbon emissions, accelerating climate change impacts. Without immediate intervention, these threats will deplete natural resources, disrupt local economies, and expose communities to natural disasters such as landslides and flooding.

 

If deforestation in Quezon continues unchecked, the province will face severe environmental degradation, including:

1.  Loss of water sources – Forests play a key role in regulating water cycles and protecting rivers from drying up. Without them, freshwater supply for agriculture and households will dwindle.
2.  Increased natural disasters – Deforestation weakens soil stability, making areas more prone to landslides, flash floods, and erosion—putting lives and livelihoods at risk.
3.  Destruction of wildlife habitats – Quezon Province is home to diverse flora and fauna, many of which are endemic and endangered. The continued destruction of forests could lead to species extinction.
4. Impact on local communities – Many farmers and indigenous groups depend on forests for their livelihoods. Unregulated deforestation threatens their way of life and economic stability.

 

OUR DEMANDS

We, the undersigned, urge the DENR and local authorities to take immediate action by:

1. Investigating the Deforestation Case in Quezon – Conduct a transparent investigation into illegal activities causing forest loss.
2. Strengthening Law Enforcement – Strictly implementing anti-logging and anti-mining laws, and penalizing violators.
3. Reforestation Programs – Launching large-scale tree-planting initiatives and forest rehabilitation projects.
4. Community Involvement – Engaging local communities, schools, and businesses in conservation efforts.
5. Sustainable Land Management – Promoting eco-friendly alternatives to deforestation, such as agroforestry and ecotourism.
6. Transparency and Monitoring – Establishing a task force to monitor and report deforestation activities, with community participation.

 

Why This Matters?

Forests are essential for clean air, water, and climate balance. The Riverside area of Sariaya, Quezon, must be protected before further damage occurs. Without urgent intervention, Quezon Province will face severe environmental and economic consequences. Protecting our forests is protecting our future.
