Stand strong in our values that all students should be welcome and feel represented.

The Issue

Dear Superintendent Schirg and Rocky River Board of Education members:

In our schools and classrooms, there is no question that "everyone IS welcome." These institutions serve as safe havens where the American dream can be realized, a place where every child, regardless of their background, can aspire to greatness. It is disheartening to consider that any implication suggesting that a poster celebrating the beauty of multiple shades of skin tone should be removed, or that diversity should not be celebrated. Those beliefs undermine the very essence of what we strive to achieve in education.

Following a story out of West Ada School District, in Idaho, where a sixth grade teacher has been instructed to remove colorful and welcoming posters from her classroom, I was compelled to do something to ensure that our beautiful district of Rocky River, Ohio avoids repeating the mistakes of intolerance and bigotry. The principle of "all are welcome" is not an opinion in public education; it is an essential truth.

To suggest that our classrooms should reflect a singular narrative is to deny the rich tapestry of experiences and identities that make our nation truly exceptional. Each child who walks through our doors brings with them unique perspectives and dreams, and it is our duty to honor and celebrate that diversity. By doing so, we not only enrich the educational experience but also strengthen the foundation of our society.

It is imperative that every student in Rocky River continues to feels valued and included, for anything less is a manifestation of weakness that could ultimately lead to the erosion of our collective greatness. Rocky River's strength lies in our unity, and our classrooms should be a testament to that unity—a place where every child can see themselves reflected in the world around them.

Let us work together to ensure that Rocky River City Schools remain beacons of hope and inclusivity, where every student can thrive and contribute to the vibrant future of our nation.

Thank you for considering this perspective. I look forward to your thoughts on how we can continue to foster an environment that truly embodies the spirit of welcome for all.
