We, the Zimbabwean community in the UK, call on the organisers of Zimfest UK and the relevant local authorities to reconsider the inclusion of South African performers at this year’s festival. This request is not made lightly, but in response to an ongoing humanitarian and human rights crisis that affects Zimbabweans and other African nationals across Southern Africa.

Xenophobic violence has become a recurring issue in South Africa, with numerous reports over the past years of violence and discrimination directed at foreign nationals, particularly Zimbabweans. According to the Human Rights Watch, there have been repeated attacks on migrants from other African nations, resulting in loss of life, displacement, and disruption of communities. Such incidents are a direct violation of the principles of love, unity, and Pan-Africanism.

Communities across Southern Africa have rallied to express solidarity with the victims of xenophobic violence, proposing cultural boycotts and campaigns as a form of protest. In this spirit, we urge Zimfest UK to join the movement and stand in solidarity with fellow Africans by choosing to exclude South African performers from the event.
