Drexel Class of 2020 Pledge

Drexel Class of 2020 Pledge
The Issue
I’m a graduating Drexel Engineering student and like the rest of my peers I’m getting myself ready for college graduation. I’ve been struggling over the last week especially to process everything that’s going on in the world, and like others that I’ve spoken to there’s been a lot of mixed emotions about trying to celebrate during a time when so many others are hurting right now.
Obviously, a virtual graduation is not what we pictured for this life achievement, but none of this year really has been according to script. It wouldn’t feel right (for me) to go through the motions of graduation and not acknowledge the suffering of others, due to the COVID pandemic, social injustice and racial inequality.
This feels like an opportunity to draw upon not only what we’ve learned in classrooms over the last 18 years, but also to act upon how we’ve learned to live our lives as citizens and human beings. We should absolutely acknowledge our hard work, but I think it’s also important to acknowledge that we’re incredibly lucky and privileged to be where we are today.
I know graduation is typically where we are celebrated with gifts, parties, and well wishes. As a Class of 2020, I think we are challenged to do more. In lieu of traditional gifts, consider taking this time to ask family/friends to instead make a donation to an organization that is devoted to helping those who are suffering now. Please also consider making a donation yourself. If you are in another program at Drexel, I encourage you to forward this message along to your faculty/administration.
If you are struggling with where to start, check out Drexel's Lindy Center (https://drexel.edu/lindycenter/) which can help with suggestions for organizations you may wish to contribute to. This is in no way comprehensive, so feel free to give to those that may personally connect with you most.
Please consider signing this petition to show your support for this campaign, even if you may not be able to contribute financially at this time. Most importantly, please take to social media and share with peers, coworkers, family, and friends. Support for this petition will function as a powerful statement from the Class of 2020 that we are committed to making positive change in the world around us for all.
“Those who have the privilege to know, have the duty to act.”
Thank you for reading, and stay well.
