The Issue

As a dedicated member of the National Organization of Workers Union (NOWU), we are deeply concerned and outraged by the undemocratic process that has transpired in the proposed merger with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union. This merger is being rushed through without the transparency and consent of its members, fundamentally undermining the principles of fairness and democracy that unions are supposed to uphold.

In the past weeks, there has been an alarming lack of communication regarding the details of this merger. Members like myself have not been provided with adequate information to make an informed decision on this critical matter. The little information that has trickled down has left many of us confused and frustrated. We should not have to choose our allegiance or be forced into a new union without knowing what it means for our representation and rights.

Furthermore, the timing and location of the voting process were strategically set to minimize member participation. Holding such an essential vote over a weekend and in an inconvenient, out-of-the-way location for most workers is nothing short of disenfranchisement. This approach ensures that few can voice their vote, which does not reflect the true wishes of the union members.

We believe every worker should have the undoubtedly fundamental right to choose their union representation. Any significant decisions regarding union affiliation, such as mergers, should be conducted transparently, fairly, and with the complete involvement of all members. This includes detailed information shared well in advance of any votes, accessible voting locations, and voting processes scheduled at times that accommodate all workers.

We demand that NOWU halts this merger process immediately until a full, fair, and transparent review by the Canadian Labour of Congress (CLC) or Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) can be conducted. This review should involve open forums, genuine dialogue with all members, and a voting procedure designed to include rather than exclude. Only then can we confidently and collectively decide the future of our union.

Sign this petition to stand up for democracy within our union, to demand transparency and fairness in all union procedures, and to ensure that our voices as workers are respected and heard. Together, let’s push for a future where union members have real power and choice in determining our professional representation and rights. Your signature makes a difference."
