Stand Against Discrimination: Stop Anti-Trans Policies in Keller ISD

The Issue

We, the concerned citizens of Keller, Texas, urge the Keller Independent School District (KISD) to reject any and all anti-trans policies that discriminate against transgender students. It is our duty to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students, regardless of their gender identity.

One policy would ban students from using bathrooms that align with their gender identity .Another Keller ISD proposal encourages inaccurate pronoun use and misgendering at school, which violates federal anti-discrimination law.

Transgender students face unique challenges in their educational journey. Studies have shown that when schools adopt supportive policies for transgender youth, they experience improved mental health outcomes and academic success. Conversely, discriminatory policies can have detrimental effects on their well-being.

According to the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), over 80% of transgender students report feeling unsafe at school due to harassment or discrimination based on their gender identity. These negative experiences can lead to higher rates of absenteeism, lower grades, and an increased risk of dropping out altogether.

It is crucial for KISD to prioritize the well-being and success of all its students by implementing policies that protect transgender individuals from discrimination. By doing so, we can foster an environment where every student feels valued and respected.

Furthermore, it is important to note that federal law protects transgender individuals from sex-based discrimination under Title IX. The U.S Department of Education has affirmed that denying transgender students access to facilities consistent with their gender identity violates these protections.

By adopting inclusive policies such as allowing trans students access to restrooms and changing facilities consistent with their gender identity and calling students by their correct pronouns, KISD can ensure compliance with federal law while promoting equality within our community.

Other school districts across the country have successfully implemented similar inclusive policies without compromising safety or privacy concerns. For instance:

1. Austin Independent School District in Texas adopted a policy allowing trans students access to restrooms matching their gender identity without incident.

2. Los Angeles Unified School District implemented a policy protecting transgender students from discrimination, resulting in improved academic performance and decreased bullying incidents.

We believe that KISD has the opportunity to be a leader in creating an inclusive and accepting educational environment for all its students. By rejecting anti-trans policies, we can demonstrate our commitment to equality, respect, and compassion.

Together, let us stand against discrimination and create a brighter future for all students in Keller ISD. Sign this petition today and join us in advocating for an inclusive education system that values every student's right to learn without fear of prejudice or exclusion.
