Increase exposure to current events in Stamford Public Schools
The Issue
In Stamford Public Schools, fellow students and I have found that we are taught history that hasn't been told to the full extent, history that is white washed, or history that hasn't been told AT ALL. In these current tines with issues revolving around social injustice and civil rights, we soon found out that we really don't know much about these topics, which ends up impacting our lives and the way we see world. This impacts how we treat others or receive treatment. People I know, including me, have experienced this in the form of racial bullying or discrimination. We believe that this issue could be addressed with more education on the topic that no one seems to know fully. We propose to not only take out the parts in our curriculum that are biased and told falsely, but to extend and add current issues such as the civil rights movement (which is still happening), police brutality, black wall street, the famine in Yemen, BLM vs ALM, racial biases, cultural appropriation, current events, the BLM movement in general, our impact on society, global warming, racial injustice, indigenous people and their impact on society, the genocide in 1492, white privilege, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia and sexism, just to name a few. None of these topics have a bias or have been change over time: these topics should be common and basic knowledge, but it's not. The sad thing is, school should and in some cases, normally is our primary source of knowledge, however with these topics, they are not taught in school and people end up learning about it on social media instead of the place where you GO to learn. We wish to see change here and social justice to be brought, however, the fist place we need to start is within the walls of our school. Email Our Superintendent here.
