Retain the Name of Washington High School

Retain the Name of Washington High School
The Issue
Washington High School, St. Paul, Minnesota was originally named after President George Washington, the first President of the United States. Washington High School originally opened its doors in 1929 to classes of 8th and 9th graders. The school was located at 1041 Marion Street, St. Paul, Minnesota. Today, Washington Technology Magnet School is located at 1495 Rice Street, St. Paul, Minnesota. Although not in the same building as originally founded, Washington High School is rich in the culture of the graduates with outstanding athletic results, highly educated citizens, and the tradition of "Rice Street" and the "North End" Area of St. Paul.
President George Washington was a solo anti-slavery statesman. He looked forward to the end of slavery when the Black population would be folded into the main population with diligence and responsibility. "By 1796, he had begun to draft his last will and testament, in which he eventually made elaborate provisions to assure that all his slaves would be freed upon the death of his wife."
Today, the Washington High School FIFTYPLUSCLUB, (5000) plus members, is a 501(c) (3) Non Profit Corporation providing scholarship grants for qualified members of the senior graduating class each year. The Organization was formed in 1984 and holds an annual reunion luncheon to raise scholarship funds, as well as to celebrate and keep alive the spirit and legends of George Washington High School.
