Monitor Liquor Store Density in St. Louis County

Monitor Liquor Store Density in St. Louis County
The Issue
North County is seeing an overabundance of liquor stores and other businesses where alcohol is purchased and consumed off-site.
Why is this a problem?
- $249 billion - cost of alcohol problems in the U.S. in 2010.
- Areas with greater liquor store density have increased violence, including homicides, aggravated assaults, and sexual assaults.
- Because neighborhoods with high crime rates are unattractive to other types of businesses, a downward spiral occurs where more alcohol retailers move in and the outlet density and related problems continue to increase.
We are calling on the St. Louis County Council to monitor the density of businesses where alcohol is purchased and consumed off-site. In addition, we are calling on the St. Louis County Council to consider this density PRIOR to issuing new liquor licenses for similar businesses. This is currently not happening, resulting in clusters of these establishments in North County.
When North County wins, St. Louis County wins. Having an over-saturation of these businesses in North County is not part of that winning strategy.
