The Issue

Cardiovascular technologists (CVTs) are the unsung heroes of our healthcare system, working tirelessly alongside doctors and nurses to ensure that patients receive the best cardiovascular care possible. These highly skilled professionals play a vital role in diagnosing and treating heart and vascular diseases, performing critical tests, and supporting invasive procedures. Yet, many healthcare facilities are failing to recognize the importance of keeping CVTs on the floor, resulting in understaffed units, overworked nurse's and potentially compromised patient care.

In Canada, heart disease remains one of the country's leading causes of death, claiming approximately 58,000 lives each year. In 2023, diseases of the heart were the second leading cause of death after cancer, accounting for 57,890 deathsnationwide. As Canada's population ages and the demand for specialized cardiovascular care continues to grow, the need for highly trained cardiovascular technologists has never been greater. Without adequate staffing, hospitals may struggle to meet patient needs and maintain.

Reducing the presence of CVTs on the floor can lead to longer wait times for critical tests, increased workloads for other healthcare staff, and ultimately, poorer patient outcomes. It also places undue stress on the remaining staff, potentially leading to burnout and high turnover rates, which further exacerbates the problem.

To address this pressing issue, hospitals and healthcare providers must acknowledge the indispensable role of cardiovascular technologists. We propose:

  1. Provide Continuous Unit-Based CVT Support: Ensure that each unit has dedicated cardiovascular technologists (CVTs) available to perform high-quality ECGs and assist nurses with cardiac diagnostics. Assign cardiovascular technologists to every  unit to work alongside nurses, providing immediate diagnostic assistance, supporting timely clinical decision-making, and enhancing patient safety and quality of care.

  2.  Ensure Accurate ECG Acquisition & Timely Documentation:  CVTs play a key role in ensuring ECGs are accurately acquired, promptly interpreted, and correctly uploaded into patients’ medical records. Maintaining consistent CVT presence on the unit helps reduce errors and delays, supports timely clinical decision-making, and strengthens patient safety by ensuring reliable diagnostic information is available to the care team when needed.

These measures not only benefit the CVTs but also improve overall patient care, hospital efficiency, and staff morale.

Join us in urging healthcare administrators and policymakers to prioritize the presence of cardiovascular technologists on the floor. Let's work together to ensure a healthier future for patients and a fair and supportive work environment for our invaluable healthcare workers.

Sign this petition to demand that healthcare facilities commit to maintaining adequate staffing levels for cardiovascular technologists, ensuring that every patient receives the expert care they deserve.
