Safe Crossing and Reduced Speed on A570 St Helens Linkway

The Issue

St Helens Council has proposed an order 2022 to reduce the speed limit on the A570 St Helens Linkway from national speed limit to 60mph.  While this is welcomed we request that the speed limit be reduced to 40 mph and either proper pelican crossings be put in place or a footbridge to give pedestrians safe crossing across the road at the Chapel Lane, School Lane and third crossing on this stretch of the road from Rainhill Stoops.

On 7 November 2018, Daniel Klepper, our son, aged only 22 was killed crossing the St Helens Linkway by Chapel Lane, Rainhill at the designated crossing – he was out walking his dog!   Two of the drivers involved said that they did not know that there was a crossing there.   The speed limit at that time was 40mph due to the roadworks being carried out further down the linkway.    The Council should take every step to ensure the safety of its community and reducing the speed limit to 40mph (as it is further down the linkway) and putting footbridges or safe, clearly marked crossings  with red lights at all relevant crossings is the only way to improve safety on this stretch of road in our view.  Sign this petition to stop others being killed or seriously injured on this stretch of road at these extremely dangerous crossings
