Spread awareness about staff discrimination of Mr. Salodkar at Pearland High school
The Issue
My chemistry teacher, Mr. Salodkar, has been one of the most inspiring educators I've ever had. At Pearland High School in Pearland ISD, he brought chemistry to life, turning complex concepts into relatable lessons. But now, this wonderful teacher is losing his job due to an unfortunate and senseless reason.
Mr. Salodkar is facing job termination because his wife, an independent visa holder, lost her job 2.5 months ago, which directly impacted his visa status. They were given a 60-day grace period, during which Mr. Salodkar approached the head superintendent, Dr. Larry Burger, requesting his visa sponsorship. Despite our district having ample financial resources to support his visa, Dr. Burger declined to help.
Pearland ISD has more than enough funds to resolve this situation. According to the district’s financial reports, millions are allocated annually to various programs and initiatives. It would not pose a strain to accommodate the costs related to Mr. Salodkar's visa, ensuring he remains a valuable part of our teaching staff.
The loss of Mr. Salodkar is not just about a single job. It signifies the loss of a dedicated educator who invests in students’ futures and academic success. His removal would deprive countless students of a quality education experience.
We implore Dr. Burger and Pearland ISD to reconsider their decision. Let’s fix this oversight and make the right choice for our community, our students, and our beloved teacher, Mr. Salodkar.
Please join me in signing this petition to reinstate Mr. Salodkar, allowing him to continue shaping bright minds at Pearland High School.
It is highly unlikely that this would help Mr. Salodkar come back to Pearland isd, but it could possible spread awareness and change the decisions made in Pearland isd school district or other districts to support our amazing Immigrants who bring teaching to life.
Humiliation and Harm in Pearland isd In past experiences.
The most alarming accounts detail specific acts of humiliation directed at minority students. One highly publicized case involved a Black student whose African-American 'fade' haircut was deemed a dress code violation. In a deeply shocking act, school employees allegedly used a permanent black marker (Sharpie) to color in the student's scalp design, reportedly while laughing, an act that caused immense emotional distress and shame. This incident, which resulted in legal action, highlights a profound failure of cultural understanding and appropriate disciplinary response from staff, demonstrating how vague or unfairly enforced policies can be weaponized against students from marginalized communities.
The Disparity in Discipline and Cultural Policies
Beyond individual acts, broader data has indicated disproportionate punishment rates for students of color compared to their white peers within PISD. Even when enrollment figures showed more white students, Black students received a comparable percentage of in-school suspensions, suggesting a systemic bias in disciplinary actions. Furthermore, parents have raised concerns that certain dress code policies were culturally insensitive, affecting students from religious minorities (e.g., in one alleged incident, a student was told they would need a note from a religious leader to wear a hijab) and non-white students more broadly. The systemic nature of this issue points to a need for more than just isolated policy changes; it requires a cultural overhaul.
The climate of alleged discrimination at Pearland ISD is not confined solely to the student body; it also reportedly affects the very educators entrusted with student welfare. Anecdotal evidence and public claims from former employees suggest that teachers and staff from minority groups or those who advocate for greater inclusion have faced retaliation, hostile work environments, and unfair termination practices. Forms of discrimination cited have included being passed over for promotions, being subjected to heightened scrutiny and unfair disciplinary action compared to their white or non-advocating colleagues, and having their concerns about student-focused bias dismissed. When the district's own personnel fear speaking out or face discriminatory treatment, it creates a culture of silence that allows student-focused discrimination to flourish unchecked. A genuinely inclusive environment must start with an equitable and respectful workplace for all PISD employees.
