Revise the policy on the eligibility of Indian-origin players for the national football team.

The Issue

It was a disappointing week for all the Indian football fans as their national team lost to Guam National team in the FIFA world cup qualifiers group stage match. Many Indians didn't even know that a country called Guam existed till the news of their National team's defeat came out. The fact was that the tiny Pacific island had the advantage of having players who have gone through better football education than the Indian national players. 75 per cent of the players who represented Guam have been born and brought up in the US and that made a huge difference. The US territory fielded as many as seven American-born players of Guam origin in their starting line-up for Tuesday’s match against India, making the full use of FIFA’s heritage rule. It’s not just Guam. In the last few years, India has surrendered its regional supremacy to Afghanistan and they also suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Maldives. Besides, a few other teams against whom India earlier had a winning record too have reversed the trend, with Palestine, Myanmar and Yemen being examples. Its high time to revise the current rule that does not allow sportsmen with foreign citizenship to represent the national team even if they are of Indian origin. There are players of Indian origin who are born and brought up in Europe and America who plays for the local clubs over there and has performed really well.  Quite a few Indian-origin players have been making a mark in Europe of late. While Michael Chopra, who is now considered to be past his sell-by date, was ready to give up his British citizenship to be a part of the Indian team, others like Luciano Narsingh, Furdjel Narsingh (Holland), Netan Sansara, Aman Verma, Yan Dhanda (England) and Harmeet Singh (Norway) too have been making waves. Welshman Neil Taylor, who plays for Swansea, too is eligible to play for India as his mother is an Indian. These players are playing in leagues which are of a higher standard and they can definitely take their country to the next level.
