Speed Control to Protect Wildlife in Banff-Yoho

The Issue

Canadians, Albertans, British Columbians, and visitors worldwide were devastated by the news of the death of two Grizzly cubs on Hwy 1 near the Banff-Yoho National Park border on June 7. The following day, the mother of the cubs, well-known resident white Grizzly "Nakoda" was also struck, and found deceased on June 10. It was a gut-wrenching story of a young first time mother bear losing both her cubs, then slowly and painfully dying on her own. Six breeding females have died in Lake Louise - Field on this highway in 4 years, due to excessive speed and traffic volume.  This is a massive blow to the Grizzly population. Lower speed limits and actual enforcement of them, using speed cameras or other systems, in imperative to protect this species.

For many, this spectacular area IS Canada, and the iconic Grizzly the symbol of this incredible place we are privileged to have within our borders. We all want to experience this area, but it is imperative to implore the federal government to reduce the speed, enforce it, and help this species out.

We need to act now, petition your Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Parks Canada, donate to CPAWS, slow down, help do whatever it takes and get the word out!
