Speak up against a picnic area deep in the Airfield Park woods
Why this petition matters
Add your name with other neighbors to a letter to Bellevue Parks opposing the propose cutting of trees and creation of picnic areas deep in the adjacent woods of Airfield Park. The letter cover these concerns:
SAFETY. Picnic areas deep in the woods would not be open to public view and that poses a danger to the neighborhood. A hidden picnic area would be prone to ruckus and nefarious activity (e.g. assaults and drug trafficking) at all hours. Any picnic area should be in the open where it is viewable by passersby.
TREE CANOPY LOSS. Creation of the proposed picnic areas would require cutting down several big trees. This is contrary to Bellevue's stated desire to preserve the existing tree canopy and add more.
WILDLIFE DISPLACEMENT. The part of the park is a mini wildlife preserve with many animals living or passing through it (i.e. deer, possum, racoon, skunk, rabbit, coyote, bobcat, eagle, hawk, owl, woodpecker, flicker & more.) These animals would likely be displaced by the picnic area incursion.
Finally, there is plenty of open space in the park for picnic tables. Also, sufficient trails already exist to and from the park as well as inside it, so cutting a new trail into the wildlife area is not needed.
