Save Landmarked Historic Orient House

Save Landmarked Historic Orient House
The Issue
A landmarked house built in 1918 in the heart of the Historic District of the Hamlet of Orient, NY, the easternmost village on the North Fork of Long Island, is threatened. The house originally was built by the Vail family, one of the founding families of the village. It was purchased by the Van Nostrand family in 1938 and has been used consistently by them until the current owners purchased it in November 2017. The new owners have applied to the Southold Historic Preservation Commission to demolish the house and build a new, much larger house in its place. The house is situated at 675 Skipper’s Lane, a prominent location at the entrance to Poquatuck Park that is located in the heart of the village, so the house is highly visible from all directions. Since 2004, landmarked houses in the Historic District have been protected from demolition or significant exterior alteration except in extreme circumstances. This house stands on a firm foundation, having easily weathered Irene and Sandy, two recent devastating East End storms, and the house is in fine condition for such an old structure. Demolishing this iconic house to replace it with a new house almost twice the size will do irreparable damage to the charm of Orient’s streetscape. If the commission were to approve the demolition of this hundred-year-old home, they will set a precedent that will endanger all of the homes in the Historic District. Please sign this petition to insure that Orient retains its fabled historic charm for generations to come. And then come to the hearing of the Southold Historic Preservation Commission on Tuesday, November 27, at 2:15, prepared to speak expressing your opposition to the demolition.
