The Future of SUU's Police Department

The Future of SUU's Police Department
The Issue
Southern Utah University is heavily considering paying the Cedar Police Department to take SUU into their jurisdiction thereby dissolving the Southern Utah University Police Department. SUU is stating that this will be a merger, when Cedar Police may only be able to take a couple officers after they apply and retest. President Wyatt has only recently brought this to the public's attention. Little effort has been made to consult neither the SUU Police Department nor students and employees when it is the safety of these same students, employees, and visitors that is being bargained with. SUU Police have kept campus and visitors safe while going above and beyond providing services such as suicide prevention, escorting students, vehicle lockouts, etc., that a larger department would not be able to supply. Chief Adams said Cedar Police would not be able to supply all services that SUU Police provide. This may result in a decrease of personalized safety and security. SUU Police personally know the campus, the culture, students and employees. Along with the potential negative consequences this decision brings for campus as a whole, the officers of the SUU Police Department have dedicated years to serving campus, especially students, and do not deserve having to start their careers over again.
Please sign this petition to keep the Southern Utah University Police Department as our campus protectors.
