SELU Students For A Universal Pass System

SELU Students For A Universal Pass System
The Issue
Due to the spread of COVID-19 in Louisiana, Southeastern Louisiana University suspended face to face classes and transitioned to online learning for the remainder of the semester. Professors/ Instructors were given three days to prepare for the transition during this unforeseen circumstance which was an unreasonable amount of time considering that most major classes do not translate well to fit the needed online format. Once the three days of preparation were up for professors, it was time for students to begin their transition which has been nothing short of disastrous for both students and professors. Due to the nation wide Corona Virus Pandemic, students at Southeastern Louisiana University have moved out of their on campus dorms and apartments to head back home all while being bombarded with assignments given by professors. When it comes to higher education, most students choose the traditional classroom setting rather than the online learning setting due to the many opportunities and resources presented. The transition to online learning has presented several negative effects. Professors are using online resources such as Google Meet to hold class sessions, but most professors are struggling to maneuver the app due to them not being familiar with its set up thus leading to the abandonment of Google Meet and the creation of lecture videos. Also, some students have learning disorders such as ADHD and ADD that makes it harder for them to focus and/or understand the material needed on their own. The transition to online learning can potentially lead to lower GPA's, more course withdrawals, and students dropping out. Another aspect to take into consideration is how the corona virus crisis has impacted students and their families. A number of students and their families have been laid off from their jobs due to this crisis. Due to this unfortunate event, many students have expressed that they are having to pick up more hours at work to help support their families all while trying to navigate online learning. Being that the corona virus outbreak is spreading at a fast rate in Louisiana, it is also possible that students have been directly/indirectly affected by it. Is school really what students should be focused on during this these trying times with everything else going on? Luckily, a group of students have presented a solution that they hope the university will agree upon and enforce. These students are advocating for a Universal Pass system for the remainder of the semester. The system will give students the option to choose "Pass/Fail" as their grade for any course taken this semester due to the events that have taken place. The "P" for pass, seen by students on their transcripts, will reflect the unforeseen events that have occurred. As an alternative for the students that do not agree with the UP system, students can choose to continue on with online learning throughout the rest of the semester and have the courses count towards their GPA. This system is based on the Universal Pass system presented by students attending Yale to their administration. However, if Southeastern's administration has any other ideas that will be beneficial to students, students will be more than willing to hear them out. Lions, I ask that you help me advocate for the frustration and concerns we all are experiencing. #LionUp
