Ruby Stead started this petition to South Yorkshire Police Commissioner

Knife crime is a serious public health problem. However, there is a lack of public information on how to dispose of knives safely. At the moment people can either take their knives to the local recycling centre, police station or use a knife drop box.

We want the South Yorkshire Police Commissioner to make it easier for people to dispose of unwanted knives. This can be done by installing knife drop boxes as part of the household recycling facilities at local supermarkets.

The general public do not relate to the current knife crime campaigns because they are seen as targeting criminals. Where knife drop boxes are available they are covered in pictures of knives and slogans which can be seen as confrontational and inflammatory: 'Bin weapons here', 'Get a life, bin that knife', Surrender your knife', Only cowards carry knives.'

The criminals do not respond well either. They are suspicious of using the knife bins because they think it is a way for the police to gathering evidence for past crimes - finger prints, blood, DNA and the possible use of CCTV monitoring the use of the bins.

People do not want highly visible knife bins installed in their neighbourhoods because of the stigma.  It signals that they live in a dangerous, high crime area. There is one knife bin in South Yorkshire.

By installing knife bins alongside household recycling facilities in local areas it deescalates the situation. Household knives and offensive weapons easily  be disposed of alongside each other and recycled for charity.
