Why this petition matters

Started by Leyla Al-Sayadi

KeepMoat and Cussins want to destroy the beautiful field and children's park in Holborn Riverside to build 355 houses in an already overdeveloped part of South Shields.

1. The plans would incur the loss of greenery which is home to birds, insects, hedgehogs and many trees (including cherryblossom trees) as well as a children's play park which is regularly used by children from all over the Laygate area and other parts of South Shields.

2. The land is used by many dog walkers many of whom have used the field for and some of these people, particularly older and more vulnerable dog walkers will struggle to take their dogs to alternative suitable spaces further away.

3. These plans also include a car park which and spaces for residential parking which will bring more pollution and congestion and ultimately accidents to an area with one of the major routes into South Shields in the form of Commercial Road.

4. The land itself was deemed as unsafe and said to be sinking when the houses that used to be there (Laygate Street) were pulled down and residents rehoused. Once built, there is no guarantee these homes would be built to last .

We oppose the decimation of this green land, park and trees which are utilised by the whole community,  for the profit margins of private developers and in particular a private developer with an increasing monopoly on the housing built in South Shields.
