It has been brought to our attention that South Strabane Township rules do not allow ANY chickens, no matter where you live or how much property you have. We are looking to change this rule to allow hens in a limited capacity. Backyard hens are a common occurrence in neighboring townships such as North Strabane, Peters, and as far as even Dormont. While we understand there must be some restrictions in certain areas, we feel this is not necessarily fair to all properties within the township.
Backyard hens become even more popular this past year during this Covid Pandemic. That is when we decided to give it a shot as well. Money was tight, and with things not always being readily available, I aimed to have at least one thing we could provide for ourselves for food...which was eggs. I also wanted them to eat all of our bugs....namely ticks, as I have Lyme disease and the surrounding property behind us causes us to have numerous ticks in our yard. My daughter now also has it because of this. I have not only had my yard treated, but we have the chickens to help curb this problem. It has been such an amazing learning experience for myself and my 6 and 8 yr old children. They have learned responsibility, the life cycle (thanks to Hawks), and we have watched babies be born both in the incubator as well as with a mom. It has also given my daughter and I something to really connect together.
To say that after a year of all this hard work (and expense) that we have to part with our pets, is heart breaking. We love our chickens just like you love your pets....their pictures are hanging in our living room lol. All because of a silly rule not allowing ANY chickens as pets, they are telling us we have to rehome them. So please help us change the township rule to allow hens.
