Fight for 20 Weeks Gestation

The Issue

My son, Alman Dale Little, was born on March 11th 2021 at 21.5 weeks gestation. The day before, my husband and I were on our way to the hospital for THE ultrasound. The one where we would find out what our baby was was. This is our first child, so everything was very new for us. During the ultrasound, our son was moving and playing with the ultrasound technician. Suddenly, she said she was having trouble getting a certain picture and needed assistance. She was gone for MORE than 20 minutes. During this time, my water spontaneously broke. My husband called for help, and it took another 25 minutes before I saw a doctor and we were told what was happening.

My son was dying, and they told us there was nothing we could do. We were told we had to just let it happen. They couldn’t remove him from my body because he still had a heartbeat. We were not allowed to even meet our son before he died. Per the hospital, because he was less than 24 weeks he was not viable and they could not induce delivery due to anti-abortion laws in the state of South Dakota.

For 12 hours Alman fought for his life inside of my body before he couldn’t fight anymore. During this time my body leaked fluids and bled. Roughly 8 hours later they started the induction process. For another 8 to 9 hours my body worked on delivering our son. First the umbilical cord, then a few hours later our son, and the placenta followed.

My goal is change the laws in support of my son Alman. Thousands of babies are born before 24 weeks who survive. There are networks of hospitals around the country who fight for these children. Life saving measure are taken everyday for babies.

It should be a choice of the parents. They should be able to choose whether they want to fight for the life of this very young and innocent child or if they want to let it go. It’s a very personal decision for each family and should not be overshadowed by government opinion. My son might have lived, he might still be with me today. The Alman Bill I would like to propose would offer options to parents in need and to unborn babies who deserve the chance to live.
