Lingampally is a very important Railway Station adjoining the Hi-Tech City Area of Hyderabad. The Station caters to a very large population living in the Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Patancheru and Rajendernagar constituencies of Hyderabad. Very nearby are also Hyderabad Central University, Gachibowli stadium and BHEL apart from many other industries and prominent institutions like IIT Hyderabad that is some kilometres away.

For their travel requirements people of these constituencies  have to trek considerable distance at peak hours to board their trains at any of the three major stations - Nampally, Secunderabad and Kacheguda. Many a time, they are forced to miss their trains too, thanks to very heavy traffic enroute to the stations.

There is a long felt need for upgrading Lingampally station and making all trains - leading to South and North - touch Lingampally and making Lingampally as a major station. However, the trigger was the recent incident wherein a professor of University of Hyderabad had to rush to his native place as his father had passed away and he could not reach the Secunderabad station on time to travel to his native place.

Touched by this incident a group of residents from Hi-tec City, Kondapur, Kukatpally, Nizampet, Bachupally, Miyapur, BHEL, Patancheru and surrounding areas came together on Sunday the 27th November 2016 to demand better rail connectivity from Lingampally. Under the banner ‘Improve Lingampally Station’, the members met at Nizampet main road and resolved that the Lingampally station should be improved so that trains travelling to major destinations such as to Vizag, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai (Tirupati), and Delhi (Nagpur route) should have a start or stopover at this station.

The members felt that this needs to be a mass movement to highlight the traffic, health and pollution issues it causes for thousands of people to commute to Secunderabad, Nampally and Kacheguda each day. This will immensely reduce the traffic on the City roads. The group is planning to collect 50,000 signatures as part of the campaign to drum up support for their demand.

The convenor of the forum, Velaga Srinivas, invited people living in these areas to be a part of the non-political task force to help achieve this goal. All one would need to spend is 2-3 hours on a weekend and to pass the information within one's  friends circles.  “We will meet the railway officials and depending on the response, we will also approach the Central and State governments,” said Mr. Srinivas.
