Restore the 4th classroom to Orchard's 2nd and 4th grades (2016-17)

Restore the 4th classroom to Orchard's 2nd and 4th grades (2016-17)
The Issue
We, parents of Orchard School students, are surprised and discouraged to learn that there will be one fewer classroom for both Grades 2 and 4 for the 2016-2017 academic year. This change will result in a significant increase in class size such that the minimum number of students per class may exceed 20 in second grade and 25 in fourth grade. Compared to state and city standards, this class size is suboptimal and above maximum recommended average per grade.
We are proud members of the South Burlington community, and many of us chose South Burlington because of its commitment to quality public education. We have come to love Orchard School for its dedication to students and its energetic, positive learning environment. We feel that the proposed increase in class size will inhibit Orchard’s ability to carry out its academic mission and continue its emphasis on the core values of respect for ourselves, each other, and the community.
We urge you to restore the Grades 2 and 4 configuration for the 2016-2017 academic year so that our students can continue to get the quality education they deserve.
