There’s  a viral video without date stamps outlining Ntando Duma a well known South African TV personality threatening another woman in an accessible parking space. Ntando Duma is seen in the video capturing herself on a live social media platform threatening the other lady , spewing racial & ageist slurs to the woman who was asking her to refrain from using accessible parking without a disability parking disc.

Locally and internationally persons with disabilities are continually facing attitudinal and environmental barriers on a daily basis. All citizens are equally entitled to the rights, privileges and benefits of citizenship as per our SA Constitution. Persons with Disabilities continually face many prejudice and daily barriers and one of where the rights of persons with disabilities are continually violated is in the area of violating the rights of persons with disabilities in accessible parking spaces.

In SouthAfrica Section 137 of the Road Traffic Act 29 of 1989, encourage Municipalities to provide for special parking spaces for people with prescribed disabilities or persons who transport them however those who do not qualify for using accessible parkings such as Ntando Duma continue to illegally park in accessible parking demarcated for Persons with Disabilities or those transporting Persons with Disabilities.

The aged and people from various race groupings are continually on the receiving end of prejudice , hate speech and unfair discrimination on a daily basis and on social media as we see Ntando Duma Mthombeni’s behavior in the clip.

We are of the view that we all have a social commitment  to promote equality and the below relief points will contribute towards discouraging such discriminatory behaviours towards other South Africans.

We cannot raise our children in such environments where the dignity of those who advise others wisely is undermined or threatened.

We have to respect one another as South Africans and not resort to threats , ageism or racial slurs when we violate the rights of others.

We have to ensure that we respects the rights of other South Africans alongside protecting and promoting unfair discrimination to one another.
