South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe have proposed to lift the current ban on the sale of their ivory stockpiles.
History has taught us the lesson that the legal trade in ivory has led to the rapid expansion of the illegal trade with dire consequences for the global elephant population.
These countries claim that the proceeds from selling the stockpiles will be used in conservation and used to enrich the lives of the poor.
The South African government is trying to recover from nine years of “State Capture” and is in no position to claim that it is corruption free yet. The new minister of the environment is presently facing new claims of corruption.
Zimbabwe is in economic melt down, CITES delegations visiting Colombo in May 2019 would be foolish to believe that the sales of ivory stockpiles would benefit anyone other than the governments themselves.
PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE OUR PETITION. We will he forwarding the results of our petitions to the delegates of CITES.
GMFER is lobbying governments to saying no to the sale of rhino horn, elephant ivory, lion bone.
