Sound of Silence from Congress on Nuclear Issues‏

On April 5th President Obama laid out a bold vision for a world free of nuclear weapons and a compelling plan to make that vision a reality. He called for dramatic changes to the nuclear weapons policies of the United States and for taking steps to eliminate dangerous, Cold-War nuclear arsenals – steps designed to increase American and international security.

The predominant response from Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, has been: “. . . . . . . . . . . .” silence.

Please click here to tell your Senators and Representatives to voice their support for President Obama’s nuclear weapons policies.

The President will need major support from both sides of the aisle to promote his agenda, as well as a two-thirds majority in the Senate for ratification of any international treaty. We need your help to encourage Members of Congress to endorse these policies.

But very few Senators or Representatives have spoken out.

Please click here to write to your Members of Congress to ask that they support President Obama’s nuclear weapons policies.

A few Senators have come out in favor of President Obama’s audacious approach to nuclear reductions.

One prominent supporter of Obama’s vision is his opponent in the 2008 Presidential election, Senator John McCain (R-AZ). Speaking on the Senate floor following a cermoney honoring President Ronald Reagan, Senator McCain said:
“Speaking before the Japanese Diet on November 11, 1983, President Ronald Reagan said, “The only value in possessing nuclear weapons is to make sure they can't be used ever. I know I speak for people everywhere when I say our dream is to see the day when nuclear weapons will be banished from the face of the Earth.” That is my dream, too, and it is one shared by many of our most distinguished national security practitioners.”Other Senators who have spoken out include Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold and Oregon’s freshman Senator Jeff Merkley, both of whom you helped elect.

These are important supporters, but they are not enough.

With vital nuclear weapons issues forthcoming, such as a new nuclear reductions treaty between US and Russia as well as a possible Senate vote on the treaty to ban nuclear weapons testing, it is more imperative now than ever before that we require our Senators and Representatives to support the President’s nuclear policies.

North Korea’s testing of nuclear weapons and missiles and Iran’s uranium enrichment program have proven that this is a critical time for global cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation – and a critical time for U.S. leadership.

Please click here to write to your Members of Congress to ask that they support President Obama’s nuclear weapons policies.

Thank you for all you are doing,

John Isaacs and Guy Stevens

P.S. We would love it if you could share with us any feedback you receive from your Members of Congress. Send us an email at advocacy@clw.org.
