SUPPORT FOR SOS SKUL IJEBU EAST
Nike Adams writes :
Hello, everyone. I hope that the whole world gets to read this. It is with a heavy heart and hot tears rolling down my cheeks that I put this piece together. I remember the first day I dropped my daughter off at SOS Kindergarten, Owu Ijebu (September, 2018). At closing time, my Mum was there to take her home but my 3 year old daughter then protested that she wasn’t coming home and wanted to stay with her teacher in the school. My mum had to call me on phone and it was not until I reassured my daughter that she would be there again the following day that she agreed to go home with my Mum. Each day she returns from school I ask her if she enjoys and likes her school and her response everyday has been affirmative. SOS Hermann-Gmeiner Schools (KG and Primary) Owu Ijebu have been home away from home for children that attend the schools. Just today, 11th July, 2019 at the meeting between parents and teachers of the school, the news of abrupt and total shutdown of the Schools indefinitely was broken to parents in the most heartbreaking and distressing manner. I broke down in tears and felt helpless. I also learnt that all the loving, caring, intelligent and very hardworking teachers’ appointments with the schools end next week Friday, 19th of July, 2019 as the schools close for the year. The only reason that was given is that the schools are not self-sustaining and that the management of SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria has decided to use the school buildings and its environs for something else (perhaps farming-rumors though). What a shame! I don’t think the decision to shut down the schools is fair enough. Parents and guardians were confused, some crying , some quiet. After the meeting, I looked at the ever cheerful children playing and waiting for their parents to take them home and I couldn’t hold back the tears. I went straight to my daughter’s teacher and gave her a warm embrace for all that she had been to not just my child but to all the children under her care. I believe that SOS Children’s Villages all over the world are known to be non-profit organizations and one of the goals of SOS Children’s Villages in about 135 countries of the world and Nigeria in particular is to care for children and also assist the government in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) one of which is Right to Education. Also, one of the specialties of SOS is Education and Development. Will SOS continue to offer a safe environment where children can learn and play in Owu Ijebu any longer? Parents were told today that all SOS Schools in Ghana had been shut down since 2016 but to my amazement I saw vacancy adverts for Head of school and teachers @ SOS Children’s villages, Ghana that was posted about 2 months ago. This is unfair!!! Yes, SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools Owu Ijebu may not yield profits for whoever thinks the schools should multiply whatever is invested here but the children are happy and the teachers are fulfilled caring for the kids which I think is superb. SOS HG KG/PS Owu Ijebu is not just one of the best but simply the best in the whole of Ijebu East Local Government area of Ogun state. How can SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria shut down the only school that produces children/pupils of high intellect and good morals in my local community? How does SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria then intend to continue to make difference through education? It is at this point that I want to appeal to SOS Children’s Villages International to please intervene. I have decided to be the voice of all the kids of SOS Hermann-Gmeiner Schools, Owu Ijebu who don’t even have an idea of what awaits them few months from now as schools re-open in September for another academic year. Education is an integral part of a child’s development. I call on well meaning donors and sponsors, supporters and corporate partners of SOS Children’s Villages International to please help resuscitate the schools. The voice of the children is saying ‘Save Our Soul’, ‘Save Our Schools’, ‘We love SOS KG/PS Owu Ijebu’, ‘Give us quality education’
