#ReleaseTheWebbCut for the TASM Duology.
The Issue
Our goal is simple: We simply want the 'Untold Story' that was promised to fans, audiences, and movie-goers alike with the release of Marc Webb's "Amazing Spider-Man" films.
It's been eight years and the franchise has, unfortunately, long since been forgotten in the eyes of many mainstream audiences. With the popular movement known as 'The Snyder Cut' achieving success with their goal, we're imploring Sony and Marvel to collaborate and finally release the lost footage that belonged to these two films.
Notable missing scenes include:
- Shailene Woodley's original role as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - while intended to be a small role in the film, it was ultimately removed in favor of giving Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy the moments they needed, as ultimately it was their story.
- Missing key elements in The Amazing Spider-Man such as the dynamic between Peter Parker and Dr. Connors, as he continues to pursue the mystery revolving around his parents. As well as Connor's son, Billy, playing a part in the film and giving the villain much needed depth.
- The alternate, darker ending to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which involved a final fight between Spider-Man and the Goblin after the death of Gwen Stacy.
- Hours of alternate, extended, and deleted footage that would help shape and define all the characters and their journey in the Duology much more. (Ex. Harry Osborn driving under the influence, nearly killing himself, Peter visiting Captain Stacy's grave after the death of Gwen, sub-plot involving a doppleganger Spider-Man, etc.)
Despite the successful new series being led by Tom Holland, and the immortalized stories brought to life by Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi, this specific incarnation is often caught in the middle and unfairly criticized for its direction and overall vision, which was caused by an imbalanced rift between the studio and the artists behind these films.
Andrew Garfield did a phenomenal job playing both Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and his co-star, Emma Stone, created a portrayal of Gwen Stacy that is not only iconic, but will be difficult to top in the years to come. Marc Webb, the director himself, was able to deliver something emotional, layered, but most of all - distinctive, in the lore and mythology of Spider-Man. These performances and direction brought a different weight and emotion to the character, telling a tragic tale, as opposed to a heroic one.
The characterization of Peter Parker was so unique compared to the previous trilogy of films, instead he was shown to be: Selfish, angry, unapologetic, but most of all - flawed. It was as if his character had a difficult time grasping the lessons being taught to him, and that he had a difficulty learning what it means to be responsible. But strangely enough, that's what made him all the more appealing and relatable, because that's what made him human.
It took time for me to understand this re-telling, it took time for me to accept it as an adaptation of the character, with whom I've loved since I was a little boy. It took time for me to understand that this Peter is on the same path as everyone else, even if he does slowly learn these lessons. What separates this iteration from his other counterparts is how the odds are consistently stacked against him, despite being the only hero in his city.
He is someone who had been stripped away of everything good in his life, from his parents, to his uncle, and finally his girlfriend, this version of Peter Parker could have easily gone the other direction and become the villains he had fought against.
Yet he didn't. He didn't give up.
Instead...
It took time for him to become The Amazing Spider-Man, to become the lone savior, and the true underdog hero of New York City.
Which is why I'm urging whoever's reading to simply sign this petition, and to finally have the famous webhead's voice finally heard again, and have Sony/Marvel do the right thing.

Your friendly neighborhood Spidey fan.
