Let Nicholas Hammond be in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The Issue

Nicholas Hammond is an American actor who is arguably best know for his role as Spider-Man in the 1977 TV series, The Amazing Spider-Man. While not the first actor to take on the Peter Parker mantle, his portrayal is arguably the most influential to how the character would be portrayed in future projects. The Amazing Spider-Man has received critical acclaim from fans and critics a like, yet was sadly canceled after only 13 episodes. Regardless, the influence of Hammond’s Spider-Man can still be felt today. Following the show’s cancellation, Hammond would go on to star in many other projects, such as Emerald CityOnce Upon a Time in HollywoodFields of Fire, and many other works.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hammond was asked about the recently released Spider-Man: No Way Home, a film that includes many actors returning to play their roles from previous Spider-Man films. In the interview, Hammond was asked on his thoughts about the rumors of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning to play their versions of Peter Parker, to which he responded with wishing he was asked to join the film. Hammond was quoted as saying, “I was really hoping I would be approached but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.” Hammond even mentions how his character could have acted as a mentor figure to the other Spider-Men, a clear sign that he is dedicated to the role. Even nearly 50 years later, Hammond still understands how influential his performance is and what the Spider-Man character means to the people.

The upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 features many alternate versions of the character. The previous film featured the likes of Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker, Gwen Stacy, and Miles Morales all standing alongside Peter Parker. Across the Spider-Verse has already shown the returning Gwen and Miles, along with new comer Miguel O’Hara as Spider-Man 2099. With this new film expanding the Spider-Man universe even further, it’s the perfect time to re-introduce Hammond’s portrayal of Peter Parker to a new audience while paying tribute to what made his original series so great. For everything Hammond has done for this franchise, he deserves to wear the mask one more time.
