Sony Corporation: Please disable HDCP on PlayStation 4 game play to allow capturing and content creation.
The Issue
TO SONY
Online gaming videos play a huge role in the PlayStation community and YouTube gives gamers a medium to craft and share their passion with other like-minded people. Millions of people browse YouTube every day for videos that offer:
- Insight and Commentary
- Tips and Tricks
- High Scores
- Reviews (checking out a game before deciding to purchase it)
- Guides (help with getting through difficult missions or tasks)
- A sense of community!
With the inclusion of the "Share" button on the PlayStation 4 controller, it is clear that there is an emphasis on creating a way to share your best gaming moments with friends. However, being only available to PSN, Twitter, Facebook, and Twitch, we ask that arguably the most popular destination for game play video, YouTube, not be forgotten.
Over the past few years this community has been growing exponentially and shows no sign of slowing down. The only thing we ask is that the PlayStation 4 is not alienated with the inclusion of HDCP like the PlayStation 3 was. Allowing content creators to capture game footage and audio from the PS4, without having to use HDCP workarounds that come with looming threats of copyright infringement, would mutually benefit both our community and the Sony brand.
The presence of HDCP is stunting the growth of the PlayStation online game play video community on a global scale. Please remove HDCP from the PlayStation 4 and allow passionate gamers to create amazing content, further expanding the gaming community as a whole!
WHY SHOULD YOU SIGN THIS PETITION?
If you have ever watched, created, or enjoyed a game play video on YouTube, this should be extremely important to you!
HDCP, High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, is a form of digital copy protection developed to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across connections. This is what prevents PlayStation 3 gameplay from being recorded via HDMI. While there are illegal work-arounds (recording via component cables, converters, splitters, etc), it would be best to have it removed from the game play side of things entirely (of course, it can be kept on things like movies, Netflix, Hulu, etc.).
In order to support the YouTube community, promote its growth, and keep doing what we love, whether you are a viewer or a creator, it should be your primary goal to have a healthy relationship with Sony. We love their consoles and we love their games, we just want to be able to openly share that love with our peers!
