Bring back Aibo, Qrio, and the Robotics Department
The Issue
Sony paved the way in robotics with the Aibo and Qrio. Robots capable of human interaction, Artificial Intelligence, and Entertainment. Sony Aibo was used in Education around the world to help teach students program development and robotics.
The AIBO (pronounced 'eye-bow') is an entertainment robot designed and manufactured by SONY. AIBO means "love" or "attachment" in Japanese, can also mean "partner" or "pal". It is also an abbreviation for 'artificial intelligence bot' ('bot' is short for 'robot') in English. There have been several different models since their introduction in 1999. Able to walk, "see" its environment via a CMOS camera, and recognize spoken commands, they are AI autonomous robots, since they are able to learn and mature based on external stimuli from their owner or environment, or from other AIBOs. SONY created AIBO to be a robotic companion/pet and promotes AIBO as having the capability to interact with its human owner in many of the same ways a living pet would - without the high maintenance.
AIBO is SONY at its very best, combining all of its flagship technologies to conceive a fully autonomous companion to accompany and entertain man in day-to-day life. More interactive and entertaining than ever. Numerous sensors and artificial intelligence enable your AIBO to learn from you and its surroundings, always evolving and building on experience. Entertaining and comforting you when you're glad, sad or angry, AIBO reflects a wide range of emotions through its lively LED-illuminated face and fun body movements. You can even ask AIBO to playback your favourite music, take photos, read the news or your e-mail, and more!
The original AIBO model presented to the public was ready by May 1999. An initial
5,000 ERS-110 models were put on sale in Japan and the US. The response was so overwhelming that 3,000 robots were sold in under 20 minutes in Japan along with another 2,000 over four days in the US. Owing to this impressive performance, AIBO has been recorded in the Guinness Book of Records 2001 (p. 127) as being the fastest-selling robot pet. Worldwide, AIBO was quickly becoming a media darling, and SONY was greatly encouraged by its success. A trend was born.
Sadly, on January 26, 2006 SONY has announced that it would discontinue AIBO and several other consumer products as of March, 2006. It will also stop development of the QRIO (SDR). AIBO will still be supported until 2013 (ERS-7M3 model), however, QRIO and AIBO technology will continue to be developed for use in other SONY consumer products in the future.
My Goal is to BRING AIBO BACK! It's amazing technology is absolutely worth this fight to get Sony's attention!
