Sonoma County is seriously considering relocating the former Joe Rodota Trail Homeless Camp (Currently temporarily moved to Los Gatos, Santa Rosa) to 3 locations in CLOVERDALE. We as citizens are outraged that this decision is happening without public forum. Our City Officials need to speak up for our Community. Our city is going to be impacted by the decisions made without public input or knowledge. Are the elected officials really working in our best interest?

The County and State have clearly declared a State of Emergency with the Homeless Crisis.

With that being said, the County and State have picked their “Top 10 Locations” for their proposed County Homeless Shelters. THREE of those locations are IN Cloverdale.

The 1st location is the dirt turn out across from Soil King on Asti Rd. The 2nd location is the Train Depot. The 3rdlocation is the corner of Citrus Fair and S Cloverdale Blvd. They would like to make the locations an indoor/outdoor shelter, which translates to tent camping.

The 1st location would be across from the entrance of the proposed $350 million dollar Alexander Valley Resort. Will Alexander Valley Resort break ground if there is a homeless shelter outside of their driveway? So, with that being said, is our City and County willing to allow this developer to “walk away” from bringing jobs and revenue to our City and County for a homeless shelter?

The 2nd and 3rd locations would be at our DOWNTOWN exit. Is that really what we want people to see when they tour Cloverdale? Not to mention across from Washington School!

Are we really ready for this? Do we have enough Police Officers? Firefighters? Medics? Ambulance Service? I do not believe our Fire Department and Police Department are ready for the added strain. What do our emergency services have to say about the increased load given the call stats in Santa Rosa? (see picture of the 2019 Santa Rosa Police calls in the vicinity of the homeless shelter in SR)

If we truly care about the homeless/unsheltered, then they NEED to be closer to areas with services such as Social Security, Mental Health, Job Opportunities/training, Probation Dept, Social Workers, Drug and Alcohol Counseling and DMV etc. ALL of which are NOT near Cloverdale. The Homeless Outreach Professionals know that in order to really help them better their situation, they need to be near services that can support them. Placing them in a field or parking lot in Cloverdale, without services is a continued recipe for disaster.

The County realizes that the newest homeless site at Los Guilicos in Santa Rosa is too far for the services needed for the homeless. Los Guilicos is only 10-15 minutes from Downtown Santa Rosa. Now imagine if the shelters were in Cloverdale. How long would it take to get to the nearest services?? 45 minutes? This makes no sense.

The high number of the homeless population are South of us in the CORE of the County. Not here in Cloverdale. Why create a problem that doesn’t exist?

Relocating homeless people to the FURTHEST location in the County away from the available services needed to them, makes NO SENSE. Why is the County considering Cloverdale? Is it because we are not in their backyard? They seem to forget our city when County funds are dispersed, yet they offer our city to be their homeless destination.

Our elected officials need to represent us and stand up, engage and respond. Most importantly, WE as a community need to also. We cannot rely on the elected officials to speak for us. Their one bad decision could cost OUR community a detrimental loss.

If YOU care about your community, please go to the Board of Supervisors Meeting Tuesday March 10th located at 575 Administration Drive Santa Rosa. This is the day that the County will decide where the shelters will go in their “Top 10”.

If you cannot attend the meeting, I urge you ALL to email James Gore our County Supervisor, Cloverdale City Mayor Gus Wolter, Cloverale City Manager David Kelley and Sheriff Essick with your concerns.

Their emails are provided below.
