Protect North Bay Wetlands!

Protect North Bay Wetlands!
The Issue
The remaining wetlands around the San Francisco Bay are few and ecologically fragile.
Disguised as an "agricultural" project, a massive industrial landfill project is being proposed for the Carneros Ranch, near Port Sonoma, where the Petaluma River enters the San Francisco Bay. This project could be extremely harmful to the north bay coast, and it is on the verge of being approved without an Environmental Impact Report (EIR). Please help demand an EIR.

Protect the North Bay Wetlands!
Please sign this petition to demand that the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors require an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the massive Los Carneros Ranch/Port Sonoma landfill project that will threaten the North Bay wetlands and waters.
The proposed project would fill the 528-acre property with approximately 20 million cubic feet of mixed fill over 20 years.
This amount of fill is roughly equivalent to the entire capacity of the Redwood Landfill in Novato.
The parcel is environmentally sensitive, one foot below sea level, and dyked for use. The fill would raise the entire property to an average altitude of seven feet above sea level.
Port Sonoma, a recreationally zoned operation, is slated to receive huge barges of dredge spoils to be pumped under Highway 37 to the parcel/wetlands area, in addition to deliveries by trucks.
These plans may also play into additional development for the Port Sonoma area, possibly including a major freight terminal, which would further degrade the North Bay environment. While the property is current zoned for agriculture and recreation, the zoning could change in the future, and the industrial fill operation could set a precedent for more industrial uses in its vicinity.
On January 24th, 2012, the Sonoma Board of Supervisors will hear an appeal of the initial approval of this project, and a request that an EIR be required prior to consideration of approval for this project.
Please join Sierra Club, Marin Conservation League, Audubon Society , and other environmental organizations in demanding an EIR for this project, to help protect the Bay Area's remaining wetlands!
