Stop drivers from blocking the Broadway & McGrath intersection and crosswalks

The Issue

Since the start of the 2019-2020 school year, drivers traveling through the intersection of Broadway and McGrath Highway (Route 28) are intentionally ignoring traffic signals and/or misjudging the flow of traffic. Drivers are increasingly continuing through the intersection with a yellow or red light — despite traffic being backed up. As a consequence, pedestrian crosswalks are being illegally blocked by all types of motor vehicles. This presents a serious danger for pedestrians, bikers and vehicles with the legal right of way.  The problem is particularly serious for pedestrians who rely on the “walk” sign to safely cross the four lanes of traffic. Families walking with toddlers or using strollers, young children walking alone to school, elderly, and disabled people face increased risk and stress as they are forced to navigate through motor vehicles continuing to move through the spaces designated for pedestrians.

Drivers must wait for traffic signals to cycle three or more times before they’re able to successfully drive through the intersection. There’s been a marked increase in car honking, yelling, lane switching and aggressive/threatening driving.

Responded
Thank you everyone for raising awareness about the intolerable, chaotic conditions at the intersection of Broadway and McGrath Highway. As was reported last Wednesday, my office reached out to the Massachusetts State Police and requested a police detail as soon as we heard about this situation. Today, the State Police got in touch with me to advise they responded to our request by assigning troopers to perform detail duty this past Friday — and they report that these troopers wrote a total of 42 tickets during the detail. The State Police further advise they plan to have a trooper on detail every day this week. In addition, we are talking with our state and city colleagues about additional measures, such as “Don’t Block The Box” pavement markings, etc. Feel free to reach out to Mike.Connolly@mahouse.gov with any questions or concerns about this or any other matter.
