Unite against the attack on Senior Editor Arnab Goswami and stand in solidarity with him.

The Issue

Dear felllow Hinduites and seniors, I request you to read the following Solidarity statement and sign this petition to stand against the brutal attack on Arnab Goswami and support him.

"We, the students of Hindu College, University of Delhi, condemn the attack on Senior Editor Arnab Goswami, an alumnus of our college and his wife and journalist Samyabrata Ray Goswami. It is a fact that these cowardly attacks are an attempt to curtail the Freedom of the Press. The fundamental right to seek and disseminate information and question the apathy of the state machinery through an independent press is under attack.
An attack on editors can only be seen as an effort to intimidate the press and silence their voice and violently resist them from invoking their freedom of expression. A vibrant democracy must ensure Press Freedom while ensuring that it brings to justice people who seek to stifle it.

The irony of the current situation is such that the victim is being painted as an offender by those who are self proclaimed intellectual journalists who claim to be pioneers of honest journalism. We stand in solidarity and support with Mr. Arnab Goswami and condemn this dastardly bid to gag the press which also seeks to carry out a successful defamation campaign against the whistleblowers.

The well planned manipulation of Arnab's litany and the funded framing of him as an offender by pupils of the same college he makes proud by his indomitable journalism, is absolutely shameful.

The statement yet to be released by the politically charged circle of the college claiming to "offically" diassociate from Arnab Goswami is an highly illegitimate act in itself and makes one wonder who pulls the strings.

The other argument that the statement would speak on 'behalf of Hinduites' is at best reprehensible and undemocratic. Individually they are free to associate and diassociate themselves from anyone these students would like to but a sane mind would agree that the radical ideas held by a few individuals cannot be representative of the sentiments of the entire college just because the former have scrupulously slapped the name of an official association on themselves.

We at Hindu would like to express our complete rejection of the proposed statement to "disassociate" a respected Alumnus of our college. We reiterate, no single body can speak for a college of near 3000 students. We condemn the imposed viewpoint, and reject it it in it's entirety.

It is interesting to note that when there was an armed attack on Arnab and Samyabrata and an FIR was filed, the Mumbai Police were strongarmed into questioning Arnab for more than 12 hours while the attackers were granted bail.

This attitude of curbing the voices of the masses continues to thrive even on our college campus which we wish to call out and will never give into.
