Stop KFC Rhodesdene

The Issue

Residents near the intersection of Carters and Selous/Cronin Roads in Rhodesdene, Kimberley stand to be negatively affected by the presence of a proposed KFC restaurant and drive-thru on the corner of Selous and Cronin Roads. Although the area is considered mixed use due to the presence of several businesses, the majority operates at normal office hours, and the latest trader, Pick 'n' Pay Rhodesdene, closes at the reasonable hour of 21:00, as opposed to being open 24 hours.

We would like for Sol Plaatje Municipality and the owner of the proposed KFC to reconsider its placement or scrap the proposal altogether, as the mitigative measures suggested in KFC's response to residents' August 2020 petition are inadequate. The impacts of the proposed development include, but are not limited to:

-Traffic congestion and collisions (the entrance will be in Selous Street, offset from PnP's entrance)

-Noise pollution - refrigeration and air conditioning units, as well as staff and customers, car horns, stock deliveries

-Littering - no matter how many dustbins are on site, KFC litter will be added to the existing burden of supermarket and liquor store litter in the area.

-Loiterers - this is already a problem at the PnP centre, which will be worse with the proposed outlet.

-Intrusive lights - security lights and signs, as well as car and truck headlights.

-Unpleasant odours - Grease and chicken smells from the chimneys, defrosted blood and fat flowing from storage/delivery areas.

-Crime - the layout of the development will expose neighbouring properties to the street, giving ample opportunity for home invasions and break-ins.

-Sewage - Kimberley's sewage network may not have the capacity to handle extra pressure.

-Runoff - The properties in question slope away from the road. During storms, paved surfaces shed large amounts of water, which floods properties and buildings. This is already a problem in Harvey Place townhouse complex. Added to the points about littering and odours, this becomes a health risk as well.
