Social Security reform for United States Citizens and Surving Dependents

The Issue

Before my father's death, he applied for his social security benefits, which he was more than qualified to receive. They informed him that he needed to be disabled for at least six months, despite his illness being progressive and being given only six months to live. Tragically, he passed away before ever receiving a single check. My father not only supported me financially, but I also took care of him during his brief illness.

His untimely death left me destitute. I am disabled and heavily relied on his financial assistance. Without access to basic necessities of life, I ended up homeless, grappling with the profound loss and financial instability all due to an intricate bureaucratic rule that failed us in our greatest time of need.

This is not just my story; it affects numerous families who find themselves in similar distressing situations. The current system is failing those it was designed to protect, particularly the terminally ill. Social Security benefits should offer a safety net precisely for moments like these, yet outdated rules and redundant delays are hindering access.

We need an urgent reform in our Social Security system that eliminates the 6-month disability period for terminally ill patients. Such changes are critical to ensuring that no family has to endure additional hardship during an already difficult time. Immediate access to entitled benefits for terminally ill patients can provide much-needed security, dignity, and support when there is precious little time left.

Join me in calling for policy change that reflects compassion and meets the real needs of those facing terminal illness. Sign this petition to advocate for a reformed and just Social Security system that truly serves the people.
