Why this petition matters

Started by Maddie White

Recently the social media app Snapchat has permanently terminated thousands of user's accounts. The account is INSTANTLY deleted with 0 prior warnings and the user loses all of their data. This data includes, friends, chats & up to SIX years of pictures, videos and memories. And users are not given any chance to download their data before or after termination.

Children and young adults have been robbed of their childhood and have had up to 6 years of their life stolen from them in an instant. Snapchat is aware that our current generation has grown up on this app and have used it to connect with our closest friends and document all our memories. Most of us have lost thousands of memories of passed loved ones, pets, childhood memories and so much more. And the COVID-19 pandemic has taken an emotional toll on everyone, especially young adults. Snapchat has been our primary form of communication with our peers, and holds our cherished memories during these difficult times.

Accounts were permanently deleted as a result of a "violation of terms". However, the violation is not shared with the user and Snapchat has not been actively responding to customer service requests, emails and DM's on this topic. Furthermore, a violation can be accidental or simply misinterpreted by Snapchat's scanning system. Other social media apps such as Instagram and Facebook give a user at least 1 prior warning before termination, or temporarily ban the user. At the very least, users deserve to have access to their data if their account is terminated. Snapchat has had millions of loyal users for over a decade and what they have done is cruel, unreasonable and no less than emotional trauma.

By signing this petition, please join me in requesting that Snapchat

GIVE USERS WHO HAVE HAD THEIR ACCOUNT TERMINATED ACCESS TO THEIR LOST DATA

REVISE THEIR POLICY TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING TO USERS IN FUTURE
