Perform at Little Falls Community High School's Day of Caring 2017
The Issue
For over five years, Little Falls Community High School has held an annual Day of Caring on the first Wednesday of May. On this day, the entire student body gets out of class until noon and volunteers with their groups (formally decided by students) in their community at usually several locations per group, most of these locations being houses owned privately by the elderly or others in need, and do menial jobs such as rake, wash windows, weed the garden, etc. at no cost to them. These people are generally so grateful they give us hugs and refreshments though not required because we do such an incredible, selfless job. Local businesses donate rakes, trash bags, window cleaner, free lunches for every student... all of the (otherwise hefty) associated costs. Over 800 students work all morning before lunch, but after lunch, we have a variety of activities as a token of appreciation for giving to our community, such as karaoke, sports for people who like that sort of thing, and whatever local entertainment they can (or cannot) find.
The Day of Caring is so grand, it is only missing one thing: school-sanctioned memeage.
In a relatively small town such as Little Falls, Minnesota, local entertainment is awfully scarce. During my freshman year at Day of Caring, a country cover band performed. During my sophomore year, we had a student-comprised alternative-rock band. During my junior year, we had no live performer. This is my senior year, and I need to go out with a bang louder than Shrek made when he threw open the door to his outhouse. You already made this year's winter formal (my friend requested "All Star" amongst all of the modern pop and hip-hop and the DJ followed through with it. It was the craziest song I have ever seen at a school dance, because everyone knew the words and felt the need to get on the floor and throw down hard no matter how disinterested they were with everything else that was playing), why not make this year's Day of Caring?
Here's what would be in it for you:
- CRAZY merch sales. Do you know how many kids would buy a Smash Mouth t-shirt just for the meme? Seriously guys, everyone is in on this meme. And if they have the ability to buy commemorative Smash Mouth t-shirts (at reasonably low pricing) upfront, many of them will.
- AWESOME publicity. Performing at a high school event because some kid started a petition and asked you to is a pretty humble and nice thing to do. It would rightfully earn you some really great press.
- RESPLENDENT timing. Day of Caring 2017 is on May 3. Do you remember when "All Star" was released as a single from the smash-hit album Astro Lounge? May 4th, 1999. This could be an 18th birthday (the years didn't stop comin') party for your #1 song. If "All Star" were a human being, it would be in my grade. Let that smash in your mouth for a second. We are it's peers.
You don't have any shows scheduled in April or May, so this is definitely possible for you granted you make the effort. Come on, Smash Mouth! Come on, Steve! Come on, Smash Mouth booking agent Brian Swanson! Let's break this mold!
