We would like to petition SMAP to come back!

SMAP, the most successful Japanese boy band with its estimated economic value of JPY60Bn ($.6Bn) a year, has achieved an unprecedented level of success in numerous genres in the entertainment industry, including music, TV, film, radio, and theater, as a group and individually for the last 28 years. Referred to as a “national treasure” in Japan, SMAP has contributed to bilateral friendships with other countries including China and Korea as ambassadors. 

On August 14th, despite SMAP's popularity with their planned role as 2020 Tokyo Paralympic supporters, Johnny & Associates announced through a press release that SMAP will disband on December 31, 2016. Although it has been reported that the decision was derived from some members desire to disband, there were no press conference nor announcements by members themselves, which caused many Japanese people question about freedom of the press and human rights issue by talent agencies.

８月１４日未明に発表されたSMAP解散の報道は日本中の関心を集めました。その理由は決して、２８年間にもわたるSMAPの業績、年間約６００億円ともされるSMAP経済効果だけに帰依するわけではなく、1月の公開謝罪を含む一連の解散騒動から浮かぶ不可解な点に起因しています。このPetitionはSMAPのファンの方のみならず、日本の報道の透明性及び、日本の国際社会におけるソフトパワーの成長を危惧する方々に、ぜひご賛同いただきたく存じます。
