Slow Traffic in Larkey Park Neighborhood!

Slow Traffic in Larkey Park Neighborhood!
The Issue
As a resident of Larkey Park neighborhood and a regular user of its community spaces, I am writing this petition out of concern for our safety. Families with children, school-goers, dog walkers and park users frequently traverse this area, relying on it being a secure and safe neighborhood. However, the current levels of speeding have made it increasingly perilous, posing a direct threat to our community's welfare and tranquility.
Walnut Creek has always been our safe haven, a place where kids can enjoy walking to their schools and people can enjoy the park without fear. However, the increasing incidents of speeding are eradicating that sense of peace. Drivers exceed the posted speed signs and often ignore crosswalks. A stop sign and crosswalk is needed at The Market at Larkey Park & First Street to help slow traffic. This area is a daily route for moms with strollers and children on bikes going to and from school, the park and Lindsay Wildlife Museum. The Market has become a community meeting place for young families and dog walkers but currently, there are no sidewalks for much of the street and drivers refuse to slow or move over for residents that are walking to and from the market or simply working in their front yards.
The situation is worse near the park and Christian School at Larkey and Mallard. The crosswalk to the park and the school is frequently ignored. The speed limit signs are ignored.
Studies show that traffic calming measures, such as speed humps, strategically placed stop signs, and speed display signs can reduce vehicle speeds by as much as 9 mph, making streets safer for everyone (National Association of City Transportation Officials).
Therefore, we urgently call on the authorities in Walnut Creek, CA to implement traffic calming measures within the Larkey Park neighborhood. Reducing speed in our streets not only guarantees the safety of our families and pets but also restores our faith in a secure community. Let's prioritize safety over speed.
We urge you to sign this petition to ensure safer streets in our precious Larkey Park neighborhood.
