Investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Ben Cowburn

The Issue

Ben Cowburn was a teenager who was allegedly “groomed” by a famous comedian.

Ben Cowburn, 18, complained that a sexual assault he experienced after being introduced to a hedonistic lifestyle and drug and alcohol fuelled parties by a TV Comic was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” before he was found dead in his room in a mental health unit.

He told officers that the man had “done sexual things” to him and if he killed himself it would make it all go away.

A teenager allegedly “groomed” by a famous comedian was haunted by seeing his face on TV and in magazines and had rapped about how he was “infiltrated” by a celebrity in the weeks before he took his own life, an inquest heard today.

Ben Cowburn, 18, complained that a sexual assault he experienced after being introduced to a hedonistic lifestyle and drug and alcohol fuelled parties by a TV Comic was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” before he was found dead in his room in a mental health unit.

He was haunted by his experiences in London and complained to police after a failed suicide attempt that it “wasn’t fair” that the celebrity was “on TV and in magazines on every page” - questioning how he had the exposure “after what he did to him”, it was said.

He told officers that the man had “done sexual things” to him and if he killed himself it would make it all go away.

He spoke about being hurt by a couple of men in London which had lasted for five months until he had left.

“He said he let it happen to punish himself and he was disgusted and wanted to push it out of his mind.”

“He then said that the male had bought him nice things and taken him to nice places but he had done sexual things to him.”

On December 20 his body was found in the private bathroom of his room in Longreach mental health unit, despite hourly check-ups from staff.

The individual referred to as X at Ben's inquest, has not even been interviewed, despite very serious allegations of sexual coersion and drug use being made against him.

We implore the Police to investigate fully all the allegations, and at least interview X.

  • Ben was 17 and X was 38 when they met.
