The Issue

Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about the escalating mental health crisis in the United States, one that desperately needs dedicated professionals to combat. As someone who interact daily with thousands of students through the Integrative Psychology Institute, I have witnessed multitudes being deterred from pursuing this rewarding career, all because of a complex and inaccessible therapy licensure system. The system, as it stands, prevents many capable individuals from extending their helping hands to our community members in need of mental health services.

Depression rates among adults in the U.S. surged to 28% during the pandemic, heightening the urgency for increased mental health support (source: Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). In the face of such a dire need, it is counterproductive to maintain a system that hinders rather than encourages the growth of proficient therapists.

Analysts from the Bureau of Labor Statistics project that the need for therapists will grow 25% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Yet, our current licensure system—priced and paced to exclude—is locking out capable individuals right when our society needs them the most.

Therefore, we call for an overhaul of the current therapy licensure system. We urge relevant authorities to work towards streamlining the process, reducing unnecessary obstacles, and providing more affordable and accessible pathways for aspiring therapists. People in need should not be left untreated due to bureaucracy. Sign this petition to join us in making mental health services more accessible for all, starting with fostering an encouraging platform for our future therapists.
