Growing up as a Native American, I have always understood the importance of our heritage and the rights that come with it. However, despite being eligible through my family lineage, I find myself without an Indian status due to the arduous process of registration. As a member of the M’ik maq community, I can quickly prove my entitlement, yet the current procedures make it nearly impossible without considerable effort and risk.

In order to register, individuals like myself are required to travel to regional offices which, in my case, is a four-hour journey. Alternatively, mailing crucial documents like birth certificates is another option, but it comes with inherent risks of loss or theft. The absence of an online portal for registering status adds to the difficulty and deters many Native Americans from obtaining the benefits that are rightfully theirs.

It's time for the government to recognize and address these challenges faced by our communities. The creation of a user-friendly online portal would facilitate easier access to Indian status registration for all eligible Native Americans. This portal would eliminate the need for long-distance travel and the risks involved in mailing sensitive documents.

Statistics show that indigenous populations continue to face disparities in healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. By simplifying the registration process, we can help ensure that more Native Americans receive the benefits they are entitled to, which is a crucial step toward closing these equality gaps.
