Signup to Save Majuli Island from Erosion, Initiative by Majuli Music Festival Foundation

The Issue

Every year, the mighty Brahmaputra relentlessly carves away at Majuli, the world’s largest river island and one of India’s most remarkable and endangered cultural sites. Majuli is more than just a geographical landmark; it is a living museum of Assamese culture, heritage, and spirituality, a place where people have preserved centuries-old traditions and sustainable ways of life. But as erosion continues to shrink this beautiful island, the soul of Majuli faces an existential threat.

Since 2019, Majuli Music Festival Foundation has worked tirelessly to bring awareness to Majuli’s plight. The annual festival celebrates the island’s rich cultural heritage and invites people from around the world to witness firsthand the stories, artistry, and resilience of Majuli’s people. Our mission is clear: to engrave Majuli in the UNESCO World Heritage list. By showcasing its unique culture and inspiring visitors, we aim to preserve Majuli’s story and traditions for future generations.

Majuli isn’t just losing land; it’s losing its people, its stories, and its very essence. With every passing year, erosion claims more homes, more farmland, and more memories. The vibrant cultures, beautiful monasteries, and indigenous practices that define Majuli are slowly fading away. Majuli Music Festival is a platform not just to celebrate Majuli, but to sustain it. We envision a Majuli where its people thrive as the island becomes self-sufficient and sustainable, where tourism brings needed income and the world is made aware of its beauty and fragility.

But time is running out. We cannot save Majuli alone. We need strong government action, international recognition, and a collective effort to address the environmental impact of erosion and climate change on Majuli. We ask for protective measures along the banks of the Brahmaputra, innovative solutions to control erosion, and support for local people to build a sustainable future on the island.

We urge you to stand with us. Sign this petition to call upon our leaders, policymakers, and the international community to protect Majuli before it is too late. Together, we can ensure Majuli is not just a memory, but a living, thriving symbol of cultural resilience and environmental stewardship.

Join us in saving Majuli. Together, let’s make sure this island, with its extraordinary legacy, stands tall for generations to come.
