Sign to reunify refugee families separated by the U.S Travel Ban
The Issue
It is now 8 years since the war in Syria has begun, and shows no signs of the war coming to an end. Due to the ongoing violence and destruction of their homes, Syrian refugees have fled to other countries seeking asylum and refugee status. Millions of children have been separated from their parents and families, living alone. Children are at a higher risk of exploitation, physical abuse and sexual abuse as they are not with their parents.
With the implementation of the U.S. Travel Ban, as of January 1, 2019:
- 3,742 spouses or fiancés were banned from traveling to their U.S. citizen partner. By October 2019, this number will reach 6,070.
- 5,542 adopted minor children were banned from traveling to their U.S. citizen mom or dad. By October 2019, this number will reach 9,095.
OF THE FAMILIES SEPARATED, 9 PERCENT ARE SYRIANS.
In 2017, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order 13769, also known as the Travel Ban/Muslim Ban. In 2018, President Trump made some revisions to the initial executive order and signed Executive Order 13780. President Trump continued to suspend Syrian refugee admittance to the U.S. Executive Order 13780 also lowered the U.S. refugee capacity for FY2019 to 30,000. Due to this Travel Ban, families who were given refugee status in the U.S. are unable to reunify with their loved ones in Syria.
Immediate action needs to be taken in order to reunify families who have been separated due to the Travel Ban. “Who are we as human beings if we ignore the suffering of others?” Families, women, children, and men of Syria need hope that they will see their families again, you can help by signing this petition advocating to lift The Travel Ban.
